Acting wise, not so much but visually it kicks those tall blue cats candy a$$es.
Mmm, Cara...

Thanks, Batsui. I was thinking of skipping this one because I heard pretty negative reviews. But I did like The 5th Element. So I imagine I'll give this a gander when it comes to the second run theatres. And I've gotta admit I'm not the biggest fan of Avatar.

I whole heartedly agree with the Avatar comparison. It was beautiful. It was also nearly unwatchable because of the dialogue and so-called character arcs. Nearly every line of dialogue was some kind of exposition. Wondering about a character's back story? No worries, you get told all about it before you even start to ponder. Looking for some honest moments with any hint of organic or spontaneous origin? Not in this movie. How about some interesting character moments or interactions? Nothing of the sort. Instead, we get more exposition only with a snarky delivery. Except for Ethan Hawke. He's only on for about 5 minutes, as a, uh, cathouse barker? luring Dane Dehaan into a remarkable and completely out of place musical number starring Reannah. Hawke manages to have far more fun than you'd think possible for this movie. Waiting for a second run is wise.

I give Valerian about an 8 on a 1-10 scale. Avatar really made this movie possible, so I wouldn't compare the two. At some point, I felt they were reusing CGI wire-frames and tweaking them to even make this movie. The acting was much better than I thought it would be. I actually forgot how hideous the lead actors are while watching it. I liked it better than Star Wars. That was my real concern. I thought I'd be watching a clone of Star Wars and have to just learn a bunch of new Aliens and characters. To some degree that's what it was, but I guess I just liked it better.
