Okay, I wasn’t too happy with how my Women Book 2 cover in watercolor was shaping up. (I think watercolor is one of the most unforgiving and hardest to control art mediums.) The color tones were uneven and bit splotchy. The overall feel was rushed and well, “amateurish”. But it had to be done and turned in for the November Diamond Preview solicitation. So once the painting was dry, I scanned it and turned it in. Knowing full well that this will not be the final
cover image. (I told Drew Gill at Image Comics art department to let the Diamond people know that the solicitation image and the final cover image will be different.)
I knew that there was no way I can fix the watercolor image with watercolor. The only way I can fix this watercolor cover painting is to use the watercolor
image as an underdrawing/underpainting for the oil painting, the art medium I prefer and have more confidence in.
However, oil painting is a long and arduous undertaking if you want to do it properly. And with my busy schedule on top of it, it’s going to be a harder task.
So I sat on the cover and brooded and waited, preparing myself.
Finally I had a small break in my schedule this weekend so I pounced on the cover, working all evening. And I’m happy how it’s turning out.
I still need to do few more passes before I varnish it, but I think, it’s finally shaping up okay.
I’ll post more images as things progress.
