Now that my crazy Marvel deadline is over, I can relax a bit and work on my creator owned projects (Liberty Meadows, Zombie King, Guns and Dinos, Dragon Lines, etc.) . The first being Guns and Dinos.

Few may know that I’ve been writing Guns and Dinos story the longest. The more I wrote the more intimidated I got about drawing it as the scenes and sequences became more and more complex. On top of that, this is really my first science fiction piece that deals with real life technology and near future possibilities. On several occasions, I thought of hiring a co-writer and artist for this project but I decided this would only dilute my vision.

So I stripped the story down to the very essence and reworked it. As always I work best by drawing it as I write. Also I’m doing this completely old school by hand lettering it.

Here’s one of the pages that I’ve been working on last night.

This has been a very productive week for me – writing wise.

I’m hard at work writing several stories. Once I have a rough outline in mind, I write in spurts, a scene here and a scene there, until I have a mosaic of various scenes. Using my predetermined outline, I then take these scenes and arrange them into a logical story. The key is to never force a scene into a story that it doesn’t fit into, no matter how cool the scene is.

Currently I’m writing 3 stories, one sci-fi (Guns and Dinos), an epic adventure story (Marvel Comics), and a humor story (Liberty Meadows). It’s been challenging writing 3 different types of story but very rewarding and fun.

I often sketch and doodle when I’m thinking about story ideas. My mind tends to wander and flashes of scenes or images present themselves during this period. The drawing above is a sketch I did while thinking about the next Liberty Meadows storyline. I know. It’s pretty weird.

Frank Cho - - Guns and Dinos, page 6

It’s Guns and Dinos again for me this weekend. My mind was just not into the Frankenstein piece this weekend. Instead of finishing up the Frankenstein illustration, I worked on my creator-owned project, Guns and Dinos.

I’m trying to kill two birds with one stone here. These Guns and Dinos pages are for the movie pitch packet and upcoming comic book mini-series. Ideally, I would present the full finished comic book to the studio in a pitch meeting but I don’t have time to do a full comic book. So I’m illustrating the key points in the story and making a condensed booklet for the pitch meeting. Later on, I’ll reuse these pages and finish the comic book mini-series.

It’s funny, as I’m drawing these pages, I realized that I love drawing dinos but hate drawing guns.
