I love King Kong

Frank Cho with King Kong oil painting

I love King Kong.

It’s a giant gorilla who runs around Skull Island with a hot blonde and fights dinosaurs or other gigantic beasts. It’s simply one of the most perfect adventure stories around.

I’ve been drawing King Kong for fun since I first saw the movie as a kid, and I’ve always wanted to do a giant oil painting of my favorite ape.

Here’s my latest attempt.

I’ve been playing around with this massive canvas for about 3 years now. I’ve already changed King Kong’s pose 4 times – completely redrawing and repainting the pose each and every time. As matter of
fact, I’m about to redo the pose completely yet again.

At the rate I’m going, this painting won’t be done for another 3 years.

Here’s a preliminary sketch that I’ve been doodling around for the painting. Note the different poses for King Kong.
