A classics major!  Very cool.  I have to say I'm a bit envious.   Cool

Don't sweat the technical stuff, Linda.  You'll pick it up in no time.

A question: Is there someone/ somewhere on the site who's willing to take questions from and/ or provide consultation to aspiring artists such as myself?

The Art & Artists section is the perfect place for that.  If you're going to be posting images, you'll need to upload them to an image hosting site like Photobucket, Imageshack, ImageVenue, etc.  Very simple to use, though some image hosts don't like nudity.

Looking forward to seeing your art!

Hi, Shawn: Classics majors are rather like artists, in a way -- more to be pitied than envied, because they can't always help themselves. The calling kind of gets in the blood. Thanks for the info about image hosting sites -- this is the kind of practical know-how that not-so-young fogeys like me need. Our lives are in a bit of a time crunch right now, so I don't expect having the chance to post anything prior to sometime in August, if then. I do have some (tasteful -- i.e. no visible dangling parts) male nudes in the portfolio, one or two of which I consider some of my better work, but they may not make it up if a hosting site won't accept them. I do have other work I can post as soon as someone invents me a 29-hour day or so (see "Men in Black"). ** Linda

Hey Linda,
I too look forward to seeing your artwork. Seems like we're from the same generation. My first words were "Ike, ike Ike." which was me trying to say "I like Ike." I lived in Hyattsville, MD about 35 years ago. We had a great time attending the U. of Maryland's Halloween horror movies (all Hammer films) when my dad was a grad. student there.
So does a classics major study Greek and Latin and so on? I did Greek and a bit of Hebrew at seminary. Also got just a touch of Latin from an English teacher in Maryland. Wish I had more because I'd use it for writing ghost stories.

Anyway, welcome to the monkey fans' house! Great to have you here. I'll be watching for your art over on the Art and Artists thread.

Best Wishes,
Aaron

Hi there! This is El Zar from the Philippines. Was looking for the Apes and Babes book during lunch time and while I didn't have enough time, will be sure to track it down later.

Would just like to say that I am looking forward to more work by Frank (Hello there!) because everything's just great-lookin'.

A former Hyattsvillain! Will wonders never cease! My most memorable experience of Hyattsville was the freak snowstorm on Veterans' Day 1987: I was at Northwestern HS (as part of my teacher training for certification) the day it hit. My husband had to come rescue me, and it took us 2 hrs. to get back home to Greenbelt. I assume from your comments that you're no longer in the area.

Yes, it does sound like we're about the same age. I remember a local TV kids' show from back home (Mass.) called something like "Brother Bob's Playhouse." Every day on the show, Brother Bob would drink a toast (I think his preferred beverage was Cocoa Marsh) to the president, and the camera would focus on a picture of Ike while playing "Hail to the Chief" as Bob drank his toast.

Aren't Hammer films deliciously silly? Turner Classic Movies trots one out every now and then, & my husband and I get a charge out of them.

In answer to your question about the Classics, yes, it normally includes study of ancient Greek and Latin language & lit. People sometimes tend to specialize in one language or the other, and may focus on a major author or genre. I've had at least a smattering of most of the genres, and have most recently been concentrating on the 3 big epics -- Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid. My dissertation topic (I'm ABD) involves looking at episodes of persuasion in those works.

Now I'm intrigued: just how would Latin figure into your ghost stories? And why not Greek or Hebrew? They're both scholarly languages as well -- granted they don't have quite the lingua franca status that Latin achieved after the end of the Classical era.

Stuff will be coming eventually on the Arts & Artists thread, if I can ever figure out how to navigate DeviantArt. Someone (Archangel? DMAN?) recommended consulting Ugo, and I may have to. I've managed to set up a Portfolio on the Deviant site, but I can't figure out how to get the pictures I put into it into my Gallery or to transfer them over here. And since I'm supposed to be dissertating, I don't have a lot of time to spare breaking my brain over Deviant. I think I may have to suggest that they change their name to Devious -- seems a more apt description of the site. But that's just me: I got left behind when the computer revolution took place. Heaven help me if one needs to navigate a website in order to participate in the Rapture.

Hey--what were the grounds for removing several posts from the "Motivational Pictures" thread? There was no nudity, no pornography, & nothing offensive. I've re-read the rules & there's nothing there to explain it.

Don't know what you posted. I figured one of these things happened:

1) We, administrators, from time to time delete dead links, repeat images, scam viral links, etc. Basic weeding.

2) We also delete anything that promotes trollism and brawls/name-calling. These topics are usually political/religious in nature. We know from multiple experiences, politics and religion bring out the worst in people. We try to keep this message board free of political messages of any kind if possible.

3) We also delete anything that pisses off any of us, administrators or moderators - me, Ugo, Dave, Brandon etc. This is a gray area and subjective to our personal taste. You have to remember this message board is a private forum and we reserve the right to delete topics from time to time. (Although this rarely happens since we're all pretty laid back and have good sense of humor.)

So if your topic got deleted or can't find something, we did it to keep this message board in harmony - a fun place to hang out, for people to unwind and enjoy themselves.

Hey--why did both the funny gif thread & the sexy gif thread disappear? And why couldn't I start a new one? There wasn't anything offensive in it!

'Mornin!
I'm a new kid to the forum, so just thought I'd introduce myself real quick: I'm Gwynn, a native of Beltsville, MD but now a Chicago resident for the past 6 yrs.  I had the misfortune to grow up with Frank--he was our "Kramer," always popping in unannounced and drawing on our walls (true story).  Too bad we painted over those scribbles...  Its been a blast following Frank during his long career and I look forward to all the crazy crap he'll continue to do.  If any of y'all were in Chicago for Wizardcon '09 or for C2E2, we may have met  Smile
See y'all 'round the forum,
~Gwynn

Was part of an ongoing mostly civil discussion last week in the BYBBQ and the thread is gone <poof> no warning  Shocked .  I assume the topic (2nd Amendment) pissed a moderator off?  Embarassed  I've only posted a few times in several years of lurking and enjoying the other posts, so I don't want to break any rules.
