Caught the Thursday. Opted for the IMAX 3D.
I'm the guy who originally said they made Kong to tall...I'm an idiot.
THE MOVIE IS REALLY GOOD.
The visuals are stunning and I'm not just talking about Brie Larson in a tight tank top...and there is plenty of action and actual scares.

I might check it out. Since it doesn't claim to be a remake of the original film I don't have so much invested in it. Looks like it could be fun popcorn movie. But judging from the previews, substituting mutant monsters for dinosaurs is not a great idea. I'll withhold judgement till I've seen it. _________________ Tokyo Aaron

I saw it last night. It has some fun visuals and the creature design on Kong is terrific. It's also fun how they riff on the original film without making this a remake. My main complaint is that Hollywood really loves to use the Moby Dick, crazy-guy-out-for-revenge, plot again and again, ad nauseum. It didn't work in Reign of Fire even though that movie had really amazing dragons. It didn't even work in Master and Commander even though that was a pretty great film that captured the feeling of the novels. It doesn't work here. You're right, Frank, there is no reason for Tom Hiddleston's character. Change the plot a bit and it could have been Samuel L. Jackson gets us out of Viet Nam. That would have been a better movie in my opinion. And I was right there is no substitute for a T Rex when it comes to a nemesis for King Kong. The movie is worth a look on video as long as you turn off your brain and enjoy some of the visuals. I have to say Kong is a great ape in this film . Better than the critter in Peter Jackson's remake. _________________ Tokyo Aaron

Yeah, I had that question about the helicopters myself. It's like the never ending supply of bad guys in some action movies, except in this case it's a never ending supply of victims for Kong to take out. The writers don't have to focus on the characters because they're only in the movie to get killed off.
It does give Samuel Jackson's character something to be pissed off about, a motive for Captain Ahab to seek revenge. _________________ Tokyo Aaron
Watched this for the first time on HBO within the last month or so. I think this may be my favorite Kong movie since the RKO original despite its flaws and honestly I think I prefer it to most other modern kaiju films. Still I think it falls victim to the trappings of modern action movies. I also felt some of the humor didn't work and probably should have been cut. The two-legged design of the skull lizards didn't really make sense to me anatomically and it felt like a mistake not to use dinosaurs like in the original. I did like the nod to Ray Harryhausen's giant octopus in It Came from Beneath the Sea. The story itself is mostly entertaining and the casting is pretty good. It's also fast paced and the CGI monster scenes are action packed. The after the credits scene gave me hope for the upcoming Godzilla sequel.
